Registration of Children in Public Kindergartens and Primary Schools in Cyprus

Do you want to enrol your child in a state school in Cyprus?
This concerns parents/guardians returning to Cyprus who wish to enrol their child in a public nursery or primary school.

What do you need to know?

Children are enrolled in public nursery and primary schools according to the educational district of their place of residence. If you do not yet have a permanent address in Cyprus, you can wait until you have settled in before starting the process. Attendance is compulsory for all children residing in Cyprus, regardless of whether they attend public or private schools, with a minimum age of 4 years and 4 months and a maximum age of 15 years.

 

What do you need to do?

Step 2: Complete the application
Depending on your child's age:

  • For compulsory education (primary school 6-12 years old via the digital portal eΔΕΑ, https://www.moec.gov.cy/edea.html or kindergarten 4 4/12 6 years old): WOO HOO YAY 11)
  • For non-compulsory education (nursery 3 – 4 4/12 (years): UPAN DDE 30

Step 3: Gather the supporting documentation

Step 4: Submit the application
Send to the relevant Provincial Education Office (see contact details below) (if it concerns a child of compulsory school age, i.e. 4 4/12   – 12 years old) or your chosen public nursery (if it concerns a child of non-compulsory age, i.e. 3 – 4 4/12 years old.

  • Child's birth certificate
  • Duplicate Vaccination Card (for primary school)
  • Bills (refuse collection, electricity) for proof of address
  • Completed application (as outlined in step 2)

Here's what you need to know about enrolling your child in a public or private secondary school or high school.

What do you need to do?

Step 1: Contact the District Education Office

To register in a public (Gymnasium or Lyceum, please contact the relevant District Education Office first (see contact details below). They will inform you about the procedure and provide guidance.

Step 2: Check Eligibility Requirements

Registration is accepted provided that the child's previous school (in Cyprus or abroad) is recognised by the competent authorities of the country in which it operates.

Step 3: Find out about School Programs and Hours of attendance

  • Attendance at public schools is free.
  • Public Gymnasiums and Lyceums operate from 07:30 to –13:35. 07:30–13:35.
  •  Certain public Gymnasiums and Lyceums operate as schools of special interest (Athletic, Music, Transdisciplinary-Interdisciplinary Learning), with schedules extending into the afternoon (depending on the type of school). Step 4: If you prefer a private school

Training and Education via Technical and Vocational Schools of Education and Training & the Public Schools of Higher VET – MIEEK

What do you need to know?

If you are returning to Cyprus with children aged 15–18, you can enrol them in public Technical and Vocational Schools of Education and Training (TESEK). Tuition is free and equivalent to Lyceum education (EQF level 4). Both theoretical and practical directions are offered, with specialisation in technological fields. Graduates are prepared for direct entry into the job market, as well as for admission to Higher Education.

What do you need to do?

Step 1:

Contact the MTEEK Directorate for guidance on registration.

Step 2:

Choose a school and field of study – there are schools in all provinces.

Step 3:

Gather the necessary supporting documents (e.g., certificates of attendance, identity card, etc.)

Step 4:

Fill in the relevant registration form.

Step 5:

Attend Greek language classes (if necessary), through the Transitional Programme at A’ TESEК in Nicosia.

  1. Public Schools of Higher Vocational Education and Training - MIEEK (EQF level 5)

What do you need to know?

If you are a high school graduate and wish to acquire modern knowledge and qualifications for the job market, you can enrol for free at the Public Schools of Higher VET - MIEEK. The programmes are two-year, certified and designed based on the modern needs of the job market. Upon successful completion, participants acquire a total of 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which ensure quality, international recognition and the possibility of academic or professional advancement.

What do you need to do?

Step 1:

Step 2:

Choose the specialisation that suits you and check the entry requirements.

Step 3:

Gather the required documents and proceed with the registration application.

Step 4:

If you meet the criteria, you can apply for a student grant.

  • The classes are in the afternoon (17:00–21:00), except for AITE which also has morning sections (09:00–14:00).

1. Admission requirements for repatriated Cypriots
Repatriated Cypriots can attend Public Universities (University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology): a) after passing the Pancyprian Entrance Examinations (see. The Law on the Conduct of the Pancyprian Entrance Examinations to Higher and Tertiary Educational Institutions of Cyprus and Greece of 2017, as later amended), or b) under a special status («supernumerary places outside the Pancyprian Examinations procedure») (see Regulatory Administrative Act 266/2009).

2. Recognition of foreign academic qualifications

The competent authority for the recognition of academic titles is the Cyprus Council of Recognition of Academic Titles (https://www.kysats.ac.cy/index.php/el/).

 

3. Financial assistance – tuition fees

Repatriated Cypriots are eligible for student welfare (student grants and student allowances), provided by the Grants and Benefits Service of the Ministry of Finance, provided they fall within the provisions of the State Student Welfare Law of 2015. In addition, based on annual decisions of the Council of Ministers, they are entitled to claim student allowances under the special status of repatriated person https://www.cm.gov.cy/cm/cm.nsf/All/A5B4A6566F301032C2258B2E00437797/$file/95.313.pdf?OpenElement).

Repatriated students with Cypriot or EU citizenship attending undergraduate programmes at Public Universities (University of Cyprus and Cyprus University of Technology) do not pay tuition fees.

Language proficiency requirements and registration process for Higher Education Institutions

Repatriates wishing to apply for admission to Cyprus Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) should obtain information directly from the HEIs regarding language proficiency requirements and the admission procedures for their chosen Programme of Study.


5. Housing – infrastructure

Higher Education Institutions through their Student Support Offices provide information on halls of residence and collaborations with private accommodation.

 

Registration Procedure (individuals who wish to attend classes) for the Adult Education Centres of Cyprus

Are you interested in registering for Greek Language courses at the Adult Education Centres of Cyprus?

This applies to adults returning to Cyprus who wish to enrol in the Adult Education Centres to attend Greek Language classes.

What do you need to know?;

Courses are offered in 25 sessions per year, once a week, with a duration of 90 minutes. Each person must complete  their application form electronically, selecting the subject «Greek Language». Registration period will take place from September 1st until September 30th, 2026 Courses are expected to begin during the second fortnight October 2026.

What do you need to do?

Step 1: Get informed via the Adult Education Centres website: www.moec.gov.cy/epimorfotikaOn the website, you will find the date, the time, and the Training Centres where the Greek language courses are held.

Step 2: Complete the application according to the district and the Training Centre you are interested in.

  • Greek as a second language: Available for individuals 18 years and older who do not have proficiency in the Greek language

What do you need to know?

The SIFE offer courses for children and adults, in urban and rural areas, in all districts of free Cyprus. There are 46 State Institutes island-wide, which operate in the facilities of public schools. The courses at the SIFE usually start in September and finish in May, they are held the afternoon and are take place twice a week for 2 periods of 45 minutes each time.

Step 1: Find the State Institute you would like to enrol at.

Step 4: Complete and submit the enrolment application

The application is filled in on-site at the SIFE where the enrolment is taking place and is submitted at the same time.

What do you need to do?

Step 1:

Gather the necessary supporting documents (e.g., certificates of attendance, identity card, etc.)

Fill in the relevant registration form.

Step 5:

Attend Greek language classes (if necessary), through the Transitional Programme at A’ TESEК in Nicosia.

  1. Public Schools of Higher Vocational Education and Training - MIEEK (EQF level 5)

What do you need to know?

If you are a high school graduate and wish to acquire modern knowledge and qualifications for the job market, you can enrol for free at the Public Schools of Higher VET - MIEEK. The programmes are two-year, certified and designed based on the modern needs of the job market. Upon successful completion, participants acquire a total of 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which ensure quality, international recognition and the possibility of academic or professional advancement.

1. Admission requirements for repatriated Cypriots
Repatriated Cypriots can attend Public Universities (University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology): a) after passing the Pancyprian Entrance Examinations (see. The Law on the Conduct of the Pancyprian Entrance Examinations to Higher and Tertiary Educational Institutions of Cyprus and Greece of 2017, as later amended), or b) under a special status («supernumerary places outside the Pancyprian Examinations procedure») (see Regulatory Administrative Act 266/2009).

2. Recognition of foreign academic qualifications

3. Financial assistance – tuition fees

Repatriated Cypriots are eligible for student welfare (student grants and student allowances), provided by the Grants and Benefits Service of the Ministry of Finance, provided they fall within the provisions of the State Student Welfare Law of 2015. Repatriated students with Cypriot or EU citizenship attending undergraduate programmes at Public Universities (University of Cyprus and Cyprus University of Technology) do not pay tuition fees.

Language proficiency requirements and registration process for Higher Education Institutions

Repatriates wishing to apply for admission to Cyprus Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) should obtain information directly from the HEIs regarding language proficiency requirements and the admission procedures for their chosen Programme of Study.

Higher Education Institutions through their Student Support Offices provide information on halls of residence and collaborations with private accommodation.

 

Registration Procedure (individuals who wish to attend classes) for the Adult Education Centres of Cyprus

Are you interested in registering for Greek Language courses at the Adult Education Centres of Cyprus?

This applies to adults returning to Cyprus who wish to enrol in the Adult Education Centres to attend Greek Language classes.

What do you need to know?;

Courses are offered in 25 sessions per year, once a week, with a duration of 90 minutes. Each person must complete  their application form electronically, selecting the subject «Greek Language». Registration period will take place from September 1st until September 30th, 2026 Courses are expected to begin during the second fortnight October 2026.

What do you need to do?

Step 1: Get informed via the Adult Education Centres website: www.moec.gov.cy/epimorfotikaOn the website, you will find the date, the time, and the Training Centres where the Greek language courses are held.

Step 2: Complete the application according to the district and the Training Centre you are interested in.

What else You Should Know know

  • Attendance: Free of charge at all Training Centres (across Cyprus)
  • Greek as a second language: Available for individuals 18 years and older who do not have proficiency in the Greek language
  • Private schools: For registration in a private school, you may consult the list of approved private schools by level and district.

What do you need to know?

The SIFE offer courses for children and adults, in urban and rural areas, in all districts of free Cyprus. There are 46 State Institutes island-wide, which operate in the facilities of public schools. The courses at the SIFE usually start in September and finish in May, they are held the afternoon and are take place twice a week for 2 periods of 45 minutes each time.

Step 1: Find the State Institute you would like to enrol at.

Step 4: Complete and submit the enrolment application

The application is filled in on-site at the SIFE where the enrolment is taking place and is submitted at the same time.

RECOGNITION BY THE COUNCIL FOR THE RECOGNITION OF HIGHER EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS (KY.S.A.T.S.)

  1. What is KY.S.A.TS.

KYSATS is the competent authority of the Republic of Cyprus for the recognition of higher education qualifications, awarded by recognized institutions of higher education or by evaluated-accredited study programmes by the competent authorities of the country they operate or offered in.

What you need to do

 

STEP 1

Go to the KY.S.A.T.Z. website in the category Application Process – Forms, and print out the form «Application for the recognition of degrees».

Applicants should be aware in advance of the type of recognition required (recognition of equivalence or recognition of equivalence and matching), following consultation with the relevant professional body to which they will apply for employment.

 

STEP 2

Fill in and sign the application form, according to the instructions.

On page 2 - point e (other information), be advised that you should mention that the application is submitted for the purpose of MINDS IN CYPRUS.

 

STEP 3

Please ensure you have the necessary documents (originals and copies), as listed on page 3 of the application (Supporting Documents), and also on the website, under the section Application Procedure – General Information.

STEP 4

Call 22806357 to book an appointment for the submission of your application.

Applications are accepted only on Mondays and Tuesdays, between 8:30 AM and 2:00 PM.

 

STEP 5

If the applicant is represented by a third party, a written authorization is required.

 

STEP 6

The fee amount is €85.43 per application and can be paid either in cash or by credit card at the end of the procedure.

When the procedure finishes, the applicant will be notified officially by letter.

  • The awarding institution
  • Sworn translators registered in the Registry of Sworn Translators of the Republic of Cyprus
  • The competent Ministry of each country (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Tuition fee subsidy for private secondary schools

What do you need to know?

The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MoESY) provides a tuition subsidy of €1,000 per year for every child of a repatriated Cypriot parent, who upon arrival in Cyprus immediately started attending a Private Secondary School (Gymnasium-Lyceum) approved by the MoESY, and after seven (7) consecutive years of permanent residence abroad, from a country whose language of instruction was not Greek.

 

What do you need to do?

Step 1: Choosing a Private School

Find the Private School in which you are interested for your child to attend from the catalogue of approved Private Secondary Schools by province, at the following link: https://sch.cy/mc/360/el_idiotika_mesi_geniki.pdf.

Step 2: Contacting a Private School

Contact the private school to obtain information about the school's policy on this issue and to obtain the application form.

Step 3: Securing a certificate

To complete the application for a tuition fee subsidy, you will need a certificate of continuous residence for seven (7) years abroad before repatriation, from the Embassy/Competent Authority of the Republic of Cyprus in the country of emigration/origin, where the language of instruction was not Greek.

Step 4: Complete and submit the enrolment application

The application is completed and submitted by the parents directly to the Private School of attendance.

 

What else You Should Know know

The Ministry proceeds to review the applications sent by Private Schools once a year and transfers the subsidy amount directly to the Private Schools for each student who meets the criteria. Depending on the policy followed by each Private School, the subsidy is either deducted upon the student's enrolment at the beginning of the school year or refunded to parents at the end of the school year.
