Residence Permit for Family Members of a Cypriot Citizen

What do you need to know

If you are a national of a third country and a family member of a Cypriot citizen, you can apply for a residence permit in the Republic of Cyprus. Eligible family members include:

  • Spouse or Civil Partner of a Cypriot citizen
  • To minors whose parent is a Cypriot citizen (provided there is no deprivation of parental care or contact)
  • Descendants of a Cypriot citizen and of their spouse or civil partner (under the age of 21 or dependent)
  • Dependent ascendants of a Cypriot citizen and of their spouse or civil partner

 

What do you need to do?

Step 1:
Once you arrive in Cyprus, make sure to register with the Aliens Registry.

Step 2:
Applied for a temporary residence permit. If you entered the country with an entry permit, you may need to provide supplementary details.

Step 3:
Fill in the appropriate application form and pay the necessary fees.

Step 4:
Monitor your application and respond to any further requests from the service.

Acquisition of Cypriot citizenship through marriage or civil partnership

What do you need to know

If you are a foreign spouse or partner of a Cypriot citizen, you can obtain Cypriot citizenship provided you meet certain criteria, whether you reside in Cyprus or abroad. Based on special conditions, you can also request a faster examination.

 

What do you need to do?

Step 1:
Check that you meet the requirements:
• You have at least 3 years of marriage or civil partnership
• If you live in Cyprus: You have lived together for at least 2 of the last 3 years
• If you reside abroad: Three years of cohabitation is sufficient

Step 2:
Download and complete form M125 in duplicate, with two revenue stamps of €8.54

Step 3:
Gather the necessary documents (see below)

Step 4:
Pay the €300 application fee

Step 5:
Submit the application with all supporting documents to the competent authority

Step 6 (optional):
If you are eligible for acceleration, please provide the relevant proof (e.g. residence permits, employment contracts, tax receipts)

 

What supporting documents will you need?

  • Birth certificate
  • Clean criminal record (up to 6 months)
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Photocopies of children's passports or identity cards
  • A copy of your passport
  • Copy of the Cypriot partner's passport or ID
  • Statement of harmonious cohabitation signed before an authorised official
  • Certificate of cohabitation from the Community Leader
  • Proof of payment of €300

Attention

All documents must be in Greek or English
• If it is in another language, an official translation is required
• Public documents must bear an Apostille or diplomatic attestation (depending on the country)
• Documents from Russia or Serbia are exempt from attestations if they bear an official stamp

Document languages and translations

All documents submitted with the application should be in Greek or English. Otherwise, they must be accompanied by an official translation into one of these languages by sworn translators or by a Consular Authority of the country of issue or by a governmental department of the country of issue. 

Apostille certifications for public documents or diplomatic certification of public documents

 All accompanying public documents issued in other countries that have ratified the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents must be duly authenticated with the Apostille stamp.

According to an EU regulation from 16 February 2019, certain public documents and their certified copies are exempt from authentication and the apostille within the EU. The exemption from authentication only applies to documents and their certified copies issued by the public authorities of an EU Member State and submitted to the public authorities of another Member State. These include:

  • documents originating from a court or court official
  • Administrative documents
  • Notarial deeds
  • officially certified documents attached to private documents
  • diplomatic and consular documents.

In the case of public supporting documents issued in countries that have not ratified the Convention, they must be diplomatically authenticated. Diplomatic authentication is carried out in one of the following ways:

  • If there is an accredited diplomatic/consular authority of the Republic in this country:
  1. Certification of the document by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country.
  2. Certification of the signature of the official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country by the diplomatic/consular mission of the Republic based in that country.
  3. Certification of the signature of the official of the relevant diplomatic/consular authority of the Republic by the Certification Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic.
  • If in this country there is no accredited diplomatic/consular authority of the Republic:
  1. Certification of the document by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country.
  2. Certification of the signature of an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country by a diplomatic/consular mission of the issuing country in a third country.
  3. Certification of the signature of the official of the relevant foreign diplomatic/consular authority by an official of the diplomatic/consular authority of the Republic in the relevant third country.
  4. Certification of the signature of the official of the diplomatic/consular authority of the Republic in the specific third country by the Certification Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic.

Certification of non-public documents 

In the case of non-public accompanying documents issued in other countries, these must be certified by a certifying authority of that country (e.g. a notary public). 

Documents exempt from any validation/certification requirement 

By virtue of bilateral state agreements that have been concluded, documents issued by Russia or Serbia are exempt from the requirement of any validation/certification, provided that they are appropriately signed and bear the official seal of the competent state authority that issued them.

Application review and next steps

Following approval of the application and the signing before an authorised official of a declaration of harmonious cohabitation, one application form M125 is sent, showing that the applicant has acquired Cypriot citizenship.

Faster application review

Applicants whose Cypriot spouses/partners have resided abroad for at least 5 years after obtaining their first Degree and have secured employment in the Republic with a start date from 1/1/2025 onwards are eligible for expedited processing of their application.

After submitting an application, eligible persons may request the acceleration of their application's examination from the Department of Population Archives and Elections of the Ministry of Interior by providing evidence to substantiate the aforementioned, e.g. copies of residence permits abroad, employment contracts abroad, tax payments, utility bills, employment contracts in the Republic and any other supporting document.

Housing Schemes for Repatriates

What do you need to know

The Ministry of the Interior offers various support schemes for the acquisition of a first home in mountainous, border, rural, and other areas. The schemes concern the purchase, construction, or renovation of a home, based on income and social criteria.

From 01/01/2026, an exemption from the two-year residency requirement in Cyprus is expected to apply – so you can apply as soon as you return.
