Military Service and Repatriated Cypriots

Cypriot citizens, as well as persons of Cypriot origin (even from one parent), have an obligation to perform military service in the National Guard, between the ages of 18 and 50.

Who is considered a permanent resident abroad

As a permanent resident abroad, you are considered a person who has their main and permanent establishment abroad for at least 10 consecutive years. This period is calculated on a case-by-case basis, e.g. from birth for those born and residing abroad or from the date of departure from Cyprus.

This status can be lost if the person permanently settles in Cyprus or remains in Cyprus for a period exceeding 12 months.

Reduced military service for repatriates

Permanent residents abroad returning to Cyprus are entitled to a reduced military service, depending on their age on arrival:

  • Repatriation until 26 years of age → 6 months military service
  • Repatriation after the age of 26 → 3 months' service

The ranking must be done within two years of arrival in Cyprus.

Process

Upon establishing residency in Cyprus, the interested party:

  • is addressed to the competent District Military Recruitment Office for enlistment scheduling
  • ensures confirmation from a Cypriot Embassy or Consulate for the duration of their stay abroad
  • submits a request for reduced service, where required

The ranking takes place every year, usually in July.
